Daria's Childcare

The need was long identified for a locally provided child-care facility because of the distances children were travelling in order to avail of pre-school services. An organising committee was formed in November 2006 representing the wider community of Moygownagh and was provided with a site generously donated by Moygownagh GAA and Moygownagh Community Council. Building began in 2007 and it was decided to name the facility Daria's Daycare after Saint Daria - the female patron saint of the parish.

Daria's Daycare, the new pre-school facility opened on May 8th 2008 and equipped with fantastic facilities and committed staff. It currently caters for 12 children in sessional care who range in age from 2yrs 6 months to school age. The daycare is a dedicated play-school staffed with highly-qualified, experienced and dedicated educators who make learning and socially a real joy for the children who attend. There are many learning activities available to the children such as sand and water play, construction, painting and drawing, role-play with dress-up and music-making. It also has a secure outdoor area with fantastic space for bikes and climbing equipment along with access to the indoor hall, stage and outdoor pitches of the adjoining Community Centre.

Moygownagh

Moygownagh (Gaelic - Magh Gamhnach) is a rural village and parish in North Mayo. Situated between the towns of Ballycastle and Crossmolina, it has a population of 585. The parish derives its name from an ancient 7th century legend where a wandering St. Cormac met St. Daria, the abbess of a monastery along the banks of the Owenmore river. She treated him so hospitably that he blessed her and her lands so that they would abound in milch cows (fertile cows with milk) thereafter the area became known as "the plain of the milch cows" or "Magh Gamhnach".
